How Las Trampas School
Transformed Culture To Increase Core Mission Alignment & Retention

Las Trampas School's mission is to empower people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to discover their capabilities and lead full lives in their homes, at work, and in the community. Las Trampas School's enduring objective is to provide innovative, up-to-date, evidence-based programming and services that respect the individuality of each participant, prioritize autonomy and choice, create relevant and meaningful opportunities for learning, and promote the greatest self-sufficiency possible.

Las Trampas School's three distinct programs, Adult Day Program Services (ADP), Supported and Independent Living Services (SLS/ILS), Licensed Adult Residential Services (ARM), made it a challenge to connect employees and develop a DEIB/Cultural Transformation Strategy to increase alignment to the core mission and better serve the community.

  • Change Management Strategy. Helped develop year-over-year (YoY) DIEB strategy using evidence-based research, industry best practices and understanding of organization’s mission, vision and business strategy.

  • Positive Behaviors Org-wide Training. As an expert in facilitating experiences, Dr. Session shared her methodology on communication and leadership skills that aim to build psychological safety and build employee skills that can be used on a daily basis.

Las Trampas School prides itself on a shared sense of belonging and is deeply committed to accessibility and respect. The work of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging Committee reflects the world envisioned by Las Trampas School, where:

  • People of all abilities feel a sense of belonging, inclusion, and friendship in their communities, and are valued for their contributions.

  • All people are empowered to make choices about their own lives and achieve their highest level of independence and potential.

  • Las Trampas serves as a leader and model of excellence for innovative person-centered services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Dr. Tana M. Session notes that Las Trampas School's organizational culture alignment to the mission is at a level where employees experience better problem-solving and longer tenure — opposite of what is typically the case for such industries.
